I enjoy cable news but there is definitely a difference between each major cable news network and I’m not going to try to persuade you to watch one over the other, but I do encourage you to not be stuck watching one network all the time. It’s important to be exposed to a variety of different ’slants’. For example we all know FOX news leans republican and MSNBC leans democrat. So once in awhile, flip over to a cable news channel that you normally don’t watch, just to get a sense of what other people are seeing and hearing.

It will be no surprise that I choose to watch MSNBC and Keith Olbermann is a large part of that reason. I find him to be a very skilled anchor on his ideological show, “Countdown with Keith Olbermann”. He isn’t afraid of showing passion and certainly isn’t afraid of letting people know his opinion as you will see below.

So when I saw the Saturday Night Live skit with Ben Affleck impersonating Keith Olbermann, I thought it was so funny I had to share it.

(Video Link)

For those who haven’t watched the show, watch the video below to see how well Affleck took Olbermann’s mannerisms and tweaked them just enough to be hilarious but not so much it drifts away from an impersonation!

Many of you that know me well know that I am a big fan of music lyrics. I search for them often so I can sing along with my favorite songs and I also use them for inspiration when I need a creative boost.

So you can imagine my excitement about this cool software I found called TunesTEXT. It’s an OSX Dashboard Widget that works with Itunes to automatically search for song lyrics to the song you are currently listening to. Not only that, it downloads those lyrics and copies them into the song ID3 info. It also shows you any album artwork attached to the file. You can also use this widget to advance the tracks or pause the music.

So anytime I’m working on something and I want to glance at the lyrics of the song that is playing, I just hit the widget key (F12) and suddenly I can sing until my voice is raspy. Below is a screen shot of the widget in action.

I have two complaints about it though. Sometimes it has trouble finding the lyrics to certain artists or albums. I guess it needs to search through more databases or something. The other problem is that usually when it is downloading the lyrics, it causes the music to skip for half a second or so. Not a deal killer, but pretty annoying. Other than that, it’s pretty great. I’d actually like to see this feature built right into Itunes.

Download it by going here: http://www.cyanworks.net/dboardTunesTEXT.html. The website is kinda sketch, but the app works great!

Time has flown by, but back in August, I got my hands on a Canon 24mm tilt shift lens ($1149 from Amazon and more info here) and played with it at a picnic/barbecue at my house with some friends and coworkers.

The tilt shift lens is very tricky to use. For the non-photographers out there: basically it gives you the ability to manipulate your plane of focus on an x, y, and z axis instead of just the normal x axis. So you can throw certain areas of the image out of focus. The problem is that the more you manipulate the plane of focus, the more bouncing around inside the lens the light has to do and therefore, the more difficult it is to accurately asses the needed exposure settings. Add to this that this is a very wide angle lens and has a tendency to distort the image at times and you get a situation where it takes a lot of practice to use this lens well.

Anyway, below is a flickr slideshow of some of the more successful images I got that night. If there is no slideshow showing up, try clicking here. Also, 3 of these shots were actually taken with my 50mm prime, but I’ll let you try to figure out which ones!

I’m interested to hear what you (the reader), think about using these slideshows on my blog versus what I usually do, which is just load up all the images one after the other down the column.

I’d love to have this lens in my bag all the time! Although it is large and cumbersome, it’s really a good one to have for a variety of shooting environments. DPreview has the following to say:

The Canon 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM is quite simply an excellent lens, which will reward users with quality images in almost every situation.

Last summer while I was working for the Santa Fe Photography Workshops, I had the privilege of working with Dave. We worked closely together for the whole summer and he was a fantastic source of knowledge and humor. Anyway, he stopped into Maine for a quick visit before doing some photo printing and then heading overseas for some documentary photography work.

We hung out, tried to get into some trouble (very nearly succeeding), and shot some pictures in various places in Maine. I haven’t really had a chance to sort through most of the shots from then, but will post them eventually.

I would post a link to his website but he doesn’t have one. Eventually he will get one and I will link to it.

Here is Dave and the waitress that fell in love with him while she served us.

The Maine Media Workshops has a 7 week work study program which involves instruction in either photography or filmmaking. The photos below were the idea of Lou, one of the filmmakers. She also happens to be a photographer and wanted to take some portraits of her classmates. She asked me to help her with the lighting setup. Carlos, another filmmaker/photographer wanted to help so it ended up being a very collaborative effort with all three of us contributing ideas and passing the camera back and forth so that we could each take shots. The models also contributed ideas for their own poses as well.

We used 3 canon 580EXII flashes for the lighting with 2 pointed onto the makeshift backdrop and the third attached with a 4ft cord to the camera aimed at the subject.

Each photographer got a copy of the pics and is doing their own post processing. The shots below are my ’selects’ from the shoot and I wanted to share them with!

Tonight I ran the show for a presentation of a film called Inside the Green Berets, produced by National Geographic. This was probably my favorite film viewing since I’ve been in Maine. The reason for the viewing is that Ryan, the director of photography, used to work here at the Maine Media Workshops as an editor, and he is here this week taking a class. So we all headed down to the theater and watched the film and had a great question and answer session with Ryan.

Now, here’s the thing, while filming this documentary Ryan and Steve the producer of the doc, were blown up along with a couple of the special forces soldiers in Afghanistan. He was seriously injured/burned and had to be airlifted to Germany. Filming was cut short by 7 days and the entire documentary changed course. It became a much more personal film and very compelling.

(youtube video)

The video above is of the producer talking about the incident and the impact it had on the film crew. The story is very engaging and powerful. With the director/producer and director of photography both in the hospital, the sound guy picks up a backup camera and records some extra footage. It’s just very moving to me because these guys are there trying to make an honest film about what it’s like to be in a war zone as a green beret and they very nearly die in that effort.

Ryan is just a little older than me and has had a similar life, so it’s hard for me not to put myself in his shoes. In the Q&A he talked in detail about what it was like and what he experienced during and after the filming. It was riveting.

Afterward all I could think about was the idea of sacrifice and what drives certain people to be willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Would I be willing to go shoot a documentary in Afghanistan or Iraq? I think since I am not married I’d be willing to risk my life and use my skills to bring back stories of the conflicts of the war on Islamic Extremists. But If I were married and/or had kids… i don’t know… Maybe I’d be more inclined to do it to try and make the world safer… or maybe I wouldn’t be willing to put myself in harms way and leave the people that depend on me for safety behind and alone. It’s a very tough moral decision and obviously one I don’t look forward to ever having to face.

The film is available on Amazon and also on youtube (divided into 6 parts, click ‘more from saif316′)

I’m working on a lot of the behind the scenes things to get this site working the way that I want. I started by bringing the content from my video production site, herostatus.net over to the ‘videos’ section of kendrickdisch.com. Then I brought my blog over, deepdisch.net. Both of those sites will now redirect you automatically to the right place here kendrickdisch.com. That’s mostly finished, but there is still some design work that needs done on both areas and many of the images used in various places in the blog are going to get redone, so there are some still some gaps there, but the content is all there and should be working normally.

One casualty so far in the process is my photoblog. I used it for awhile just to post photos but I never really knew exactly how to utilize it. It didn’t fit in with my style, so I axed it. I still plan on posting photos on the blog in a similar fashion, but now what I’m going to have is the ability to subscribe by category to my blog feeds. That way if you only want the photos you can just subscribe to that specific category RSS feed. I’ll explain more later. If you look back through the blog posts, you will actually see all the content and comments from my photoblog are actually already merged with the content from deepdisch.net.

I’m going to redesign my photo galleries and also install a new password protected client area for my photowork. A new section I’ll be adding is my section called ‘consulting’ or perhaps ‘digital tech’. A lot of what I do is helping with computer problems and consulting with photographers and filmmakers on digital asset management and associated topics. I’ve been doing this for over 8 years now, I figure it’s about time to make it officially part of my site.

All of this stuff takes lots of time to develop and design, so please be patient with me as I work to make this happen. I’m only able to work on this site a few hours per day if I’m lucky, so progress is slow, but things are definitely progressing and I’m pleased with the results so far.

Anyway, keep checking back for updates. Thanks.

I’m opening up myself to criticism by talking about a subject I don’t know a whole lot about, but in any case, I’m not happy about what is happening and since I have a blog, I’ve decided to voice my opinion on the topic.

Let’s go back a bit in history, all the way back to when Clinton left office, there was a surplus in our budget which hadn’t happened under either of the previous republican presidents. It took a liberal “tax and spend” democrat from the lowly state of Arkansas to actually put this country on the right path. Sure things weren’t perfect but they were pretty good and getting better.

In 2000 Bush ran against Gore as a “compassionate conservative”. He didn’t turn out to be either of those things. The United States quickly dove into that surplus and then started spending massive amounts of money all while cutting taxes. It’s the opposite of a “tax and spend” liberal. It’s a “borrow and spend” conservative. In fact, the US debt has doubled since Bush took office. (source)

Due to the complete and utter greed of Bush’s friends in business and coworkers in the government, every possible avenue of making money was exploited. Gambles were made with reckless abandon and the people in position to make important decisions about financial matters, made all the wrong decisions. I’ve actually been concerned for quite some time and in fact made a post right here on this blog back at the beginning of 2007 concerning this very topic. I quoted an article talking about the need to solve the problem now, not when the economy goes south. Here’s what I quoted:

The good news is that because the problem only grows more intractable with every passing day, our dithering politicians will have fewer options to chose from when the crisis hits thereby making their jobs that much easier. The bad news is that the more time we spend in denial, the less time remains for us to get busy and do something about it. There is even the danger that if we wait too long, we will face a potentially unfixable problem on the scale of what the Soviet Union experienced - catastrophic economic failure.(source)

So, this situation was easy enough to see years ago by experts and those experts were able to relay that information to the public that cared, including me. So how can the government not have known? The answer is they did and they didn’t care.

I don’t trust this government at all and I do not want to give them any more money. This government has screwed up the lives of so many people already that I’m not willing to let them touch any more of the taxpayers money. If I had a say in the matter, most of the executive branch of government would be impeached and perhaps jailed and members of the do nothing congress we have, would be relieved of duty. This goes for both democrats and republicans. I’m particularly disappointed that Barack Obama supports a bill like the one the Senate passed yesterday and the House will be voting on tomorrow.

Secretary Paulson actually has stated that he will be leaving his post in 4 months. We don’t know who will replace him. This proposed bill gives the person who will replace him an incredible amount of power. If you listen to some people talking about this “crisis” they seem to suggest that if this money isn’t handed over to the Secretary of the Treasury immediately, then the entire global economy will collapse and the world as we know it will be over. That’s a pretty significant level of trust we are putting on somebody who already has one foot out the door and then on the unknown individual who will replace him.

I suggest both presidential campaigns name the person they would choose to appoint to the position and let them start taking questions as to how they would handle things. It just makes sense that we should have this knowledge when our congressmen are voting for this bill and we as voters need to know before cast our ballot for president.

But back to the point, obviously $700,000,000,000 is a lot of money. A lot.
To put it into perspective, the Iraq war has cost this country : ###
(source)

My immediate reaction to the idea of spending $700,000,000,000 is “woah… is buying up bad debt really the best way to spend that much money?” I don’t know the answer to that question but neither does Congress. The fact that the Bush Administration is trying to hammer this legislation through without giving people time to think about it, makes me super suspicious about their motives. Bush has gone on TV a few times now and given ominous sounding warnings about the urgency of this crisis:

(youtube video)

The problem is, we’ve heard this before from the Bush administration… Colin Powell trotting out to the UN with a powerpoint slideshow talking about the urgency and need to invade Iraq and the hastily passed Patriot Act. Two examples of this routine leading us down a path that in hindsight we should not have followed.

They claimed last week that if the bill didn’t pass by tuesday of this week, the world would end. Or at least the economy would be beyond saving. In reality we are still fine. And we will be fine for quite some time. I hope congress will do some small things that will help the economy now, then once a new administration is able to come in, they can work on some plans that will actually significantly help the situation in the right way, with proper deliberation and some actual thought about the future.

I think about what a $700,000,000,000 investment in alternative energy research and development would do for our nation in the long term. I think about ways that money could be spent on a national health care plan and a real investment in education. These are things that will actually help our economy by creating wealth, not just taking good money and sending it after bad money.

I have several more thoughts on the topic, but it is getting late, and I’ve already said plenty.

To end, here is a short video of Eisenhower warning against the dangers of the military/industrial complex, and it’s scary accurate!

So the other day I went with the gorgeous Elizabeth Cecil and her class to Acadia National Park. She was teaching a small class called Vision and Discovery and I took the day off work to hit the park with them and my pal Dave who was in town for a couple days.

Unfortunately, we were there during the middle of the day on a very bright day so the lighting is very harsh…

Ok, so I volunteered to drive the Workshops van, and got pulled over in the van. I was driving fine, but the van had a “for hire” plate and so we were supposed to have a special permit, which we didn’t have because we didn’t know we needed it. Fast forward a few minutes and we are free to go, but next time we just gotta get the proper permit.

So because it was so bright and I wasn’t really getting any good shots at the beach, I decided to take some pictures of the people hanging out at the beach.

Here’s the view from the top of Cadillac Mountain. If you were to come here for the sunrise, you would be the first person in the United States to see the sun for that day.

Being a part of the Maine Media Workshops means that I get to watch tons of presentations of work each week including lectures by the faculty and on Friday nights, work from the students for that week. I’ve seen lots of work and my favorite of the summer has been the work produced by the Platypus Workshops, led by Dirck Halstead and P.F. Bentley.

The Platypus program is designed for journalists who seek to learn the art and science of using video to tell a story. Here are three of the projects they produced while here. They are short but awesome!

So it’s been a little while since I have posted any images to this blog, not because I didn’t want to, but because I have been working on some other things lately, mainly reorganizing my entire digital life and developing some backup procedures and making sure I practice what I preach when it comes to data storage. I’ll go into detail a bit later.

Anyway, I had dinner with a few friends of mine the other day and they both got lobster and I got shrimp. Now the thing that amazes me about people eating lobsters is how much work it takes to get the meat and how messy it is. So here are a few pictures:

It’s so messy you have to wear a bib to eat lobster! (Jill and Katie)

This summer I’ve had lots of occasion to interact with the police here in Maine.

I had a party at my house that got a little loud and the cops came and asked us to keep it quiet.

Somebody bumped into my car in the parking lot and didn’t leave a note, so I had to file a police report.

I witnessed a car accident and had to explain what I saw and leave my information as a witness.

I had to file a police report on behalf of my employer concerning a work related issue.

I had to bail a friend of mine out of jail in the middle of the night.

As a photographer, I often get questioned about why I’m taking pictures and often get told to stop taking pictures. Usually it’s not by police, because I know the rules of where and when I can shoot, as do they, so we have no problems, but security guards are a different story. But I know my rights so I don’t get pushed around and honestly sometimes the security guards are in the right so I do abide by their request to stop shooting.

So far, in all of my experience with cops, I have found them to be professional and courteous and have nothing against them doing their jobs. In fact, I would consider being a cop myself if it wasn’t so boring. I feel that my confidence in knowing my rights and the fact that I rarely have anything to hide has led to my good experience with police. However, I do know that not everyone experiences the same situations in dealing with the police, so I encourage people to know their rights. The video below is a good place to start.

Ok so after months/years of debating I’ve decided to combine three websites into just one website.

Everything will now be housed on www.kendrickdisch.com.

Herostatus.net, my video production site, and this site, www.deepdisch.net, will both close and the contents will become part of www.kendrickdisch.com.

The reason for this is that I am a ready to make some major renovations to www.kendrickdisch.com and feel that this is the best way for me to showcase the variety of areas that I have an interest in. I’m an artist, a photographer, a video producer, a website administrator, a blogger, technology consultant, and a 26 year old single guy and I want all of these things to be a part of www.kendrickdisch.com. I am tired of driving traffic to three different sites, it just confuses people and I’ve found the traffic patterns are very different for each site, so I want to combine them and take advantage of the traffic that does come to www.kendrickdisch.com.

I’ve been blogging on www.deepdisch.net since 2006 and don’t want to delete the archives, so I will probably try to find a way to just move them over. I haven’t yet decided exactly how all these elements are going to fit together (hence three sites in the first place), but I think this is the smart move and will be a worthwhile change.

What do you think? Am I too spread out? Or is it cool that I have three sites for three different content types?

So Russell Carpenter was here in Maine teaching a few weeks ago. He was the cinematographer on “Titanic” which won an Oscar award for Cinematography. This night he was showing one of his recent films called “21″ starring Kevin Spacey about some Blackjack Card Counters that are also MIT students. It was a cool little film, but not as good as I expected.

This particular photo took me a few minutes to get because the theater is so dark I have to shoot at a really slow shutter speed handheld which causes motion blur and camera movement. I stood in that spot clicking away waiting for him to do something interesting with his hands but not have them blurry. This was one of three that turned out, from about 25-30 clicks. Some people in the crowd got a little mad at me for distracting from his talking, but I don’t really care cuz I got this cool shot that will probably get used somewhere for promotion of the Maine Media Workshops.

This morning I saw a horrible car accident. I didn’t have a memory card in my camera so I have no original visual aids to go along with this story. So I had to steal the images below from here…

Saturday night was the big summer ending party for the staff. It was a great party with lots ‘memorable’ moments. I ended up staying at the place where the party was but woke up at 7:00am and decided to head home and sleep some more.

I was driving on the main road called Route 1 (two lanes) when a red pickup passes me on the left. There are yellow lines and its obviously a no passing zone, but he is going really fast. I slow down and let him by, but he keeps drifting further left until he bounces off a guardrail on the far side of the road. He then comes back into the oncoming traffic lane and then quickly drifts back off the left side of the road and hits a rock embankment at a slight angle and the truck goes airborne and then lands upside down next to the road. The weird thing is that between hitting the guardrail and then hitting the rock embankment he didn’t apply the brakes at all or appear to slow down. I’m guessing he was going about 40 miles an hour when he hit the rocks. It all happened very very quickly and the sound of the collision was super loud.

I immediately called 911, reported the accident, then jumped out and ran over to the truck. I couldn’t really see much because the roof was pretty smashed in. I could see a body and I heard some groaning. I told him that help was on the way and asked if he could hear me and how hurt he was, but didn’t get any responses. Another woman came over at that point and was dressed in nurse scrubs so I let her talk to him further. I couldn’t really tell the position of his body, I couldn’t see his head, but the airbag had went off and it was covered in blood as well as the rear view mirror. There was really nothing further I could do.

The ambulance got there really quickly and a bunch of cops came too. It was probably less than 2 minutes from the time of the accident to the arrival of the ambulance. Once the paramedics had arrived I went over to the cops and started explaining what happened. They took my info and then said they would call me later if they needed anything else. Then they suggested I go away because they were closing down the road and I shouldn’t be in the way.

This is when I wish I was taking pictures. I would have stayed and shot until there was nothing left to shoot, but since I had no way of doing that I got in my car and drove home and went back to sleep. When I woke up hours later I wondered if it had been a dream. Unfortunately it wasn’t. click here for more details and more pictures.

Obviously, I hope this guy survives, but I don’t think he is going to make it. After seeing the crash and the result of the crash, I’m not optimistic about his chances.

So I have been meaning to do this for a really long time, but I finally got around to ordering some new business cards to hand out while I’m shooting or just to give people I meet. I should have done this a year ago, but time has a way of slipping by when we are focused on other things.

I ordered 1000 doublesided cards from overnightprints.com and am really pleased with the way they turned out.

I got a little help from a friend of mine on the design. I think they look great and I can’t wait to pass them all out!

I love football. Both playing and watching. I watch both college and NFL, but much more into NFL football because of the whole fantasy football thing. I’m not sure how, but I started liking the Packers and their quarterback named Brett Favre. He played with enthusiasm and true grit (yeah that’s on purpose) and I kind of latched on to him as my favorite player.

pic stolen from the nydailynews.com

I was crushed when they lost in the playoffs last season. I was so excited about a possible Packers vs Patriots superbowl! Then when Favre announced his retirement in March, I was really disappointed because I thought the Packers could probably give it another solid superbowl run.

I had a sneaking suspicion that I would see Favre again with that green number 4 jersey playing in Green Bay on Sundays. And now it looks like that could be true. He is coming out of retirement and will be joining the Packers for his 17th season. There has been tons of drama about this, this summer, but I’m happy about it. My prediction was that he would probably come out of retirement a little later in the season. Probably about 3 games in because his former backup, Aaron Rodgers would get hurt and Favre would come out of retirement and put the Packers on his back and carry them happily ever after into the sunset that is a superbowl championship.

The details still need to be worked out at the time of this posting, but I’m pretty excited about watching Favre this season and I’m rooting for a Packers vs Patriots superbowl!

UPDATE: Damn… I jumped the gun a bit… Favre was traded to the Jets. I don’t hate the Jets, but I’m not a fan either. This means that my hopes of seeing Favre duel with Brady in a superbowl can’t happen. I just can’t believe the Packers are silly enough to let Favre go… crazy football drama!

so the other night a bunch of us were playing capture the flag and I broke Hannah’s face…

This pic was taken 5 days after the injury.

It was very very dark and I was running as fast as I could to grab the flag or at least untag one of my teammates. She was standing between me and the flag and she reached out to tag me, I tried to go around her, and in the process, my elbow made quite an impact with her cheek and eye. I knew from the second I hit her, that it was a pretty severe injury. We stopped the game and went to get her some first aid. At first we thought it was just a black eye, but when it wouldn’t heal, she went to get x-rays and they confirmed the fracture to her zygomatic bone, commonly called the cheekbone.

She took it like a champion and just so that everyone knows, she tagged me out an instant before I nearly killed her with my elbow. Good job Hannah!

One year flies by pretty fast.

I wanted to write something today, because a year ago somebody I was very close to died, but honestly I’ve got nothing to say. I do carry the fury of a thousand hurricanes with me every day but there’s nothing I can do about it now. I just have to keep living my life in the best way that I can and hope that’s good enough.

Here’s some lyrics by one of my favorite bands…

Scar by Jarris (listen on myspace)
i feel this cut so deep in me
a night of tragic memories
all that could have gone
has gone wrong
and all the these thoughts
still eat away
please find another heart to break

i can’t take another dose this strong

so here i go
another nightmare
a wasted sleep
no there’s no resting here

why can’t i just teach myself not to care
tell me why this is so unfair

light the paper watch it burn
a diary of you is gone
ash will find its way and turn to mud

my guts will spill and bleed for you
can this be the last thing i’ll do
holding on to words that scar my heart

i used to hold you so close at night
you told me your dreams
i gave up on mine
so this is my solution for
when you pull away

take me back, cuz i can’t take it
i can’t take it
